Ligature Awareness Training
This course has been designed to help the learner identify and describe ligature risks, conduct risk assessments and follow an advised operating procedure for responding to ligature incidents, including the use of tools. There are exercises to apply your understanding throughout the course. The aim of the course is to introduce best practice techniques and provide processes and strategies which when applied can help the learner to reach a level of competency in handling situations where a ligature has been used, or where there is the option to apply appropriate preventative measures.
The content may include:
- Identifying risk factors for self-harm and suicide with an understanding of ligatures and ligature points.
- Demonstrating the safe handling, storage, maintenance, and operation of ligature cutters.
- Explaining protocols for disposal and replacement of ligature cutters to ensure readiness in emergencies.
- Describing appropriate First Aid actions following strangulation or attempted strangulation, demonstrating actions in simulated practice.
- Using situational communication skills, verbal and non-verbal techniques, to reduce immediate risks.
